.. A Free Scotland Would Be a Hilarious Disaster

Been waiting for a good critique on the upcoming reality soap drama... even if by some Mick joker.
Summary: One more transition from first world to third world.

Watching the entire series 'Monarch of the Glen'.. where the comic relief, Duncan' was put in charge of lands and in any other surroundings would be in a sheltered workshop.

And a long time watching the Rangers/Celtic idiot fans from afar. Oh, here's some now!

And unlike some anglophiles of suspect Acadian ancestry.. I qualify for Clan Tartan, albeit as a Reiver, I can comment readily on the stupidity of those devolving into leftist trough feeders.

I'm glad you brought this up because this story intrigues me. What's to stop Wales or N. Ireland from the same action, economics and infrastructure be damned. Whether you're a fan or not, John Oliver had a funny piece on Scottish independence last night:

Cuba-with-chilblains, here we come! (I've always enjoyed O'Rourke's writing).

His HBO show might be my favorite 30 minutes of TV each week. I am a fan of his comedy and I have (sadly) learned about a lot of things I probably wouldn't know as much about otherwise had I not watched his show.

Why leftist, 'fog? After all secession is something best associated with right-wing radicals escaping -- you know -- the strong grip of the oppressive central government that "no longer adheres to the virtues that [we've convinced ourselves] once made our nation great."

No, this is a different kind of idiocy. Scotland hasn't the manufacturing or farming base to provide the kind of self-sufficiency an emerging nation has to have to survive and grow. Their ONLY hope is to get into the EEC and become -- with the Irish Republic -- the primary receptor of community development funds. After all, Ireland has moved completely out of the 19th century thanks to the EEC. The thing is, there are a couple of members who have already vowed to veto any move to include Scotland as a member.

This is a great case of "be careful what you wish for." The last time a nation was this deluded was when West Germany demanded reunification and, upon getting their wish, saw their economy tank for the better part of 15 years.

The Oliver schtick was funny but oddly irritating. Maybe too long?

Your button is pretty easy to push, Don. ;) But the references to Cuba are apt.

Facts remain, notwithstanding my sympathies to the Scots... the Armstrong Clan Sash and badges gifted to my two new daughters-in-law were sourced in Scotland through a broker, what else is there to push the country? I dont drink Scotch.
Besides the North Sea reserves shrinking, the 'Wind' industry ... which of course only lines the pockets of the defacto baronies, by way of UK subsidy... is a bust as it is everywhere and cannot be relied on to put or keep a penny in Scots pockets.*

Now.. as to the EU. We would see yet another member in the category of Greece and Spain. You think Germany can afford yet another poor cousin? They've already handicapped their own revenue with their stupid energy schemes. And Greece and Spain know it. Can't even count on their vote.

MAYBE France would vote to accept them because they hate England ...and they are politically stupid.
Now... just suppose England FINALLY got smart / off their asses and quit the EU?

As I mentioned we have been streaming 'Monarch of the Glen' which was a fictional microcosm of the troubles faced. In the end, no one was able to make the estate go, despite weird, London subsidized schemes, and the last Laird ended up selling the estate anyway.

    * What if I suggested the only way to prosperity for Scotland was to go against their grain and build a bunch of new-tech Nuclear power plants and sell those Gigawatts south.
    Don't be surprised.

Except, unlike Ireland and Greece and etc etc, Scotland are sitting on a lot of oil reserves...

Personally, for me as an American, and not being obtuse, I'm confused why people *wouldn't* want to be a fully independent nation. But hey...

For the same reason, i don't want to follow my idiot governor and secede from the USA and make Texas an independent nation. After all, we've got boatloads of oil and natural gas reserves.

No, I don't want the incompetent leadership that comes from giving the reins to mindless extremists.

Now, the Peoples Republic of South Texas is, of course, an entirely different thing.

Would argue that Texas does not equal Scotland, nor does their respective relationships to England/USA, for a myriad of reasons. For one, and considering this a footy site, Texas doesn't compete as a separate nation.

Except the conventional oil reserves are dwindling. And if you look closely, the CURRENT tax revenue flow favors the Scots. ie; more FROM London than TO London. That is why I referenced Monarch of the Glen.. the only schemes to keep the estate going involved Grants and Subsidies. The show was NOT about that specifically but the subplots were always there. The local economy was not sustainable without them.

Since I'm looking at human nature, and not how things OUGHT to be as discerned by some ivory tower thinker, the Scots are nuts.. but then again they always have been.
Of COURSE future technology might fix the oil issue by way of 'off shore/near shore fracking', but given the mindsets and times, not very likely in near future. However it likely WILL be 'energy related'.
Let me expand a little on the ONE future bright spot, which is keyed on the Scots being an ornery bunch; I say again, New Tech Nuclear Power stations.
Since the Greens and Trough Feeders are hell-bent on returning GB to per capita energy usage of the Whale Oil era* {without harming whales, of course}, an independent Scotland would be free to take that contrarian course.
    * When you read about UK power outages this winter, dont be surprised.
Be more surprised if there are none.

Back to the joke side... too bad I missed this one before the Great Day.

    Scottish Independence Is Crap
    by Gavin McInnes [IMG]

Being a humorous introspective on what makes up the character of a Glaswegian.

Which brought to mind a story I heard in London about why there's not much Scottish industry, particularly in "Glos-gie"
    Start an auto plant.
First week there are 3 times the applicants as jobs to fill.
Second week, half the work force calls in sick at least two days.
    Third week, they unionize
Fourth week, they go out on strike.

    I blame John Calvin

Glad the Scots decided to stay with Great Britain. It was just too much of an unknown financially to leave and while the SNP promised it would look like Sweden, there was just as much a chance (or greater) it would look like Ireland or Greece.

I did find it interesting that, just like here, when you rely on the youth vote, the only thing you can rely on is that they won't turn up as promised.
