I've finally resigned myself to the fact that our gentleman savior will depart so lets get a poll going on who everyone wants.

I voted for Bob Bradley because I know we can afford him. I DONT want Sven and I've read Hughes will be too expensive. I dont know much about Curbishly

This is now the official manager discussion thread.
I was remiss in not making it so at the beginning instead of leaving most of the posts in the transfer thread. Now it's too much work to separate them

It's going to take a manager w/a keen sense of the club's budget, I just can't see SGE working under those parameters. Curbishley did a very good job at Charlton, and was there a long time. He was a okay at Spam (I was surprised to see he had a winning record), but had a messy divorce w/management at the end. Hughes' Blackburn teams were always gritty and he would be my first choice w/Curbs second.

He's old and hasn't coached in England ever, but Otto Renghal formerly of Greece and many German clubs would be an interesting hire.

I feel like my beloved dog just died.

Do you think Woy will be able to hang on to Gewwawd? I'm not so sure, maybe too many "r"s for one name.

I officially don't give a crap if Roy finishes in the top half or gets fired halfway through at Liverpool.

He may have been our greatest manager ever, and I believe that saving us from Sanchez-induced relegation certainty and then moving on to the Europa League final is enough to make him legendary. But he's gone now, and I don't give a crap who he puts on the pitch anymore. Liverpool are just 11 guys in laundry that ain't ours. I want US to win. If lLiverpool's manager suffers as a result, I could give a big fat rats ass.

    Moving right along.

Don. Just as I check on how former respected Fulham players are doing, I'm going to be checking in on Roy. I wish him the best, except when he's facing Fulham. It's that attitude, that respect for those who helped us on our journey that separates us from the likes of Chelsea.

Mark Hughes got my vote, but I'll get behind anyone we hire as I feel our future manager will need our support. Would have liked to see Danny Murphy's name on the poll since his name seems to be popping up everywhere as a "dark horse" replacement. (that said, Hughes would still be my top choice)

Rehhagel has a pretty good track record, but he's also 71 years old, so it seems like he'd be at best a short-term hire.

"Everywhere?" Well if you go to Google News, and search "Fulham Manager"..
    yeah.

    Especially .. on 'Cottagers Confidential'
Why not let your cute 15 year old niece borrow your car overnight?
Why not eat 10 of your favorite candy bars and a gallon of Kool-aid at a sitting?
Why not put on a cape and jump off the roof to see if you still can't fly?
Why not slam your fingers in a door?

I swear, sometimes it is almost too much to bear...

I finally voted in this poll. I was surprised to see that my choice was the overwhelming favorite. That's VERY unusual.

I like Murphy and I think that he'll be a good manager some day, but you don't start your career at the Prem. Cookie did a damn good job, and shouldn't have been fired in the panic he was, but there are relatively recent examples at Newcastle and Middlesboro why you don't give the manager's job to your legendary captain.

I think some history is being revised here.
Cookie wasnt fired in so much a panic as he was fired in due process. He DID do a 'pretty good job, considering..'
Dont judge his performance based on what came after him. Lawrie wasnt a fit.. he quickly became clueless, too.

Seriously, I get upset when people who claim to be aficionados ignore the obvious. You dont keep trying the same thing over and over to see if it'll work next time.
'Player to Manager' gets MAYBE ONE shot per owner. If it works, good; dodged the freakin bullet.
If it doesnt, he wont try it again. He would have to be insane to try it again.

The odds of success v failure DO NOT get better with each try!!!

Now think about all the players turned coach/managers you know of. What their records? How many achieved success with the team they played for and in their first coaching position?

I can only think of one, offhand. And it sure's hell aint Preki.

That accomplishment is SO rare that you want that guy to take over coaching the next level. While there's time to see if they can handle it.

So, while I'm plumping Jason Kreis for USMNT, Fulham is a whole different story. The USMNT wont get relegated if they lose the Gold Cup.

And Kreis for US aint the same as Beckham to manage England, either.

But Murphy for Fulham IS the same. I'd rather see Cookie Coleman come back.

Why cant Ray Lewington just become the manager. Surely he knows how Roy did what he did, except for maybe he wouldnt be as shrewd of a business man.

One of the reasons I rarely visit this forum anymore has to do with how much pettyfog annoys me. NOBODY HERE IS SUGGESTING DANNY MURPHY SHOULD BE OUR NEXT MANAGER...TAKE A PILL.

Don't you have any post mod'ing or member scolding to do?

Some men are great #2's but something in their makeup prevents success in the head job. From most accounts, Ray fits that description.

    Well.. I finally got it!

You thought I was attacking you for bringing it up.

Nope. It was a surprise to me that anyone with half a brain would suggest it.

And just to set the record straight, from what I know and read, right after my choice of SGE, I'd favor Hughes as well. I dont know enough about Curbishley to hazard much and I dont think Bob Bradley is too good a fit.

Where Bradley might have done well is if some Yank had bought Crystal Palace with a view toward rehabbing that team and with some money to do it.

Someone on FOF mentioned Bob Houghton as a potential new manager. He played for Fulham, is friends with Roy, and has a similar, parallel career to Roy's. He managed the Colorado Rapids for a short time in the 90's but was fired. Anyone know anything about that?
