I'm so saddened to hear Earl Weaver has passed away. I'm a lifelong O's fan and former MD resident and Earl managed the team for the majority of my childhood (was manager before I was born and retired when I was 15). He was a very colorful character, an innovator and a true Baltimore legend. While I'll always remember him for overseeing the most successful period in Orioles history, his antics are seared into my memory as well. I absolutely loved watching him go after umpires, kicking dirt furiously, especially when it was one of the handful of games I got to attend each year.

On his retirement, he said he wanted them to put "the sorest loser who ever lived" on his tombstone. I wonder if this will happen. RIP Mr Weaver and thanks for so many memories.

As a fan of the Orioles since the stopped being the St. Louis Browns, I'll always have a lot of respect for Earl, and a lot of fun memories. I remember the Orioles trying to smash his tomato plants during batting practice, his tortured relationship with his surrogate son, Jim Palmer, and most of all the incredible show he used to put on when he got thrown out of games.

The word was that at the beginning of every season he used to get 25 copies of the American League rules. He'd keep one in his pocket in every game -- not to refer to, but to use to rip up under the umpire's nose in a "Well, if you aren't going to pay attention to the rules ... ." What a beauty.

I've quoted the Earl of Baltimore on several Fulham sites, including this one. Although it's not particularly accurate this season for Fulham, my favorite of his sayings is "You're never a good as you look when you win or as bad as you look when you lose."

Rest in Peace, good sir, because you never did in life.
