I was driving home yesterday from Columbus and I heard Hannity going off on the administration for not reacting quicker to the rig disaster.
    - I'm not sure whehter it was snark or not, cause I switched him off.

Today on blogs I see NYT, Bill Maher and assorted others are doing the same, if as gently as possible.
And the theme seems to be..

    'Obama's Katrina'

    Yes.. and no.

Because no matter what was done by fed agencies in either case the first response duties fall SQUARELY on the local operator or government.

BP is a large company and they are charged not only with safe operation but with having a contingency disaster plan... and not just 'ONE' but plans B, C and D.

Thus it was up to BP to quickly and accurately assess the potential damages and respond accordingly. Which means to ask for federal help as soon as it appeared it might be needed.

I see no evidence they did that.

Thus BP is as liable for the initial damages as New Orleans and Louisiana were with their Fcukwad scapegoat dithering political considerations.

I made the case, THEN that you have to expect federal agencies to screw the pooch in terms of ready response, thata it's up to the lowest and immediate level to get things rolling.

Bush took a lot of fire for things he had no control of and LIB Big Government asslicking shitheads continue, to this day, to heap that on him.

Well, I SURE as hell am NOT going to blame Barack Obama for this.

    Why?
Because, unlike some on here, I dont talk out of both sides of my mouth just to support some ossified political ideals. Or bitch about one guy 'doing x' while remaining silent when my hero does the same thing.

Government Agencies are BUREAUCRACIES!!! The bigger they are and the more they are staffed with appointees, paper shufflers, and interns for the dirty work the less effective they are.

The more you nationalize something the worse it responds to individual incidents and needs.

.. you know... like Health care, border protection, Financial regulation, Energy.

You name it, and one thing is sure... the key part is not that it will never screw up.... it's how hard it is to change the mechanism that screws up.

If it's a corporation, they can be sued right out of business assuming you can get a fair hearing on it.

If it's an arm of government.. guess what happens! They fire a few, shuffle a few and, in a month or so, go back to surfing porn.

More like increase the size of said agency. They're "underfunded" or "understaffed" you know.

    BP will pay for spill

Which is exactly right... that's what Lloyds of London is for

Of course, the REAL costs of this will be borne by us.

Not by directly increased energy costs due to reinsurance premiums but by the political shitheads who will make a meal of it.

That's why I find this disaster so conveniently inconvenient.

Sometimes you have to work hard to avoid looking for the Reynolds Wrap.

Interesting that BP is going to pay for the spill since they say that it "isn't their accident."

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36912754/ns ... vironment/

and who are these "political shitheads" and how will they cause us to pay "the REAL costs?" [serious questions; most of my coverage on the disaster as come from The Weather Channel and PBS].

Here's a balanced viewpoint including a post by 'industry insider'..
    - note that it supports my OP! How FEMA/EPA responded later does not matter, the point stands. And a great point on DoD response, as well.

Even Don might read it even though it's on 'Powerlineblog'

    - Note that John Hinderaker is a lawyer, not an engineer.

The CORE ISSUE is that the mechanical preventer didnt 'prevent'. What that MEANS is 'did not function as designed'

So.. as in the case of the first Wright Bros flights {MAnned Flight will never work , too dangerous} there has been/will be those who call for no more drilling or even shutting down existing wells.
    - When the REAL solution is to improve the technology because we'll need it.

I would have thought an astute analyst would expected that and I am also surprised it hasnt been said already on the 'eminently balanced' NPR. Wonder why?

They certainly have a past record of fast-tracking Environmentalist viewpoints into their programming

And gee, Don. Tell you what I'll supply the dotted lines AND connect them if you want.

Even time we hear a sniffle from the Straits of Hormuz, the price of fuel goes up. Immediately after the rig explosion, the price of oil went up.

    - So the answer is obvious. We can artificially regulate the price of oil, while taxing its carbon, AND while restricting access to reserves, until of course, the industry is nationalized. At which time there'll be a tech breakthrough and deepwater production can start again.

But the price stays up, to incentivise 'GREEN ENERGY'.. which is always just around the corner.

    1. I've been listening to/watching NEWS: i.e. how big the spill is, how fast its spreading, how difficult it has been to seal the leak and contain the oil spread. Perhaps this is hard for you to understand, but when I hear something has happened, I don't IMMEDIATELY turn to hear/watch/read someone give his opinion on what this means politically, as a matter of fact, I tend to avoid these sort of programs/sites as a matter of course. Whenever some suit decides to opine about causes, I either figuratively or literally tune out. So, no, nothing I heard on NPR or TWC had anything to do with blame, etc. [Got any evidence of the insidious political tie-ins for The Weather Channel, by the way?]

    2. Once again, who are these political shitheads? How will they make us pay "the real costs?" Names and ways, please! Oh, and I'm assuming "we" are those of us who actually pay taxes.

I am literally about to feel the results of this spill, being on, as well as running businesses that attract toursits to, the Gulf Coast and all. I am afraid our 2nd Annual "Soccer by the Surf" Tournament, our biggest fundraiser, won't be quite the draw we were hoping.

That said, my legal background is now providing an opportunity to personally be involved in making sure those responsible pay...dearly. And it will be my pleasure.

    Sorry to hear that
    - gasp! Go figger!!! Run out of Asbestos and dog bite issues?

Anyway.. here's the first of the shitheads, now.

Cant hardly wait to see who's appointed to the EPA investigative panel!

Christian, here's hoping that nothing that has happened will cause any adverse effects on Soccer by the Surf. I spent an amazing 5 day weekend in PCB in the early 80s, and I've had a soft spot for the area ever since. Hope all goes well.
