Granted it was against Illinois State but Iowa's offense showed signs of life for the first time in three years today.

The fill was 72-0 is the second largest margin of victory in school history, 85-0 in the 40s and our punt returner set a single game record.

Was also glad to see Illinois pick up a strong win week one and NORTHWESTERN BEAT A RANKED TEAM!?!???

My wife and daughter had a Mom/Daughter day which left poor ol me home alone with the dogs and...the remote control...HEAVEN!!!

Best newcomers: the kid Kirk for your Aggies, Matt. Adding salt into the wounds of those sparkling gold Christmas ribbon wearing Scummies (most ridiculous units ever), is the lightening fast frosh went to High School 15 minutes from Sun Devil stadium. Rosen showed for Ucla that he can flat out sling it.

Best Win: 74 years and 39 games of frustration are over for Temple as they finally beat Penn State and in dominating fashion 27-10.

Best Game: For entertainment purposes BYU beat Nebaska on a Hail Mary in a wild game with lots of momentum swings.

Worst Performance: Penn State and Stanford have 2 of the best returning QBs and they each were so ultra conservative they got what they deserved. Congrats Tim on Northwestern!!

Louisville proved not ready for prime time. Petrino called a trick play on their first snap that was intercepted and it went downhill from there. Auburn deserved the victory, clearly the better team, although one could wonder what would happen without the mistakes and turnovers. Might make for an interesting bowl rematch. Kentucky almost screwed the pooch at home against the Ragin' Cajuns. THAT would've made the Card fans happy. Bottom line....we're still a hoops state.

Va Tech was going toe to toe with Ohio State until QB got hurt, but a single word sums up Braxton Miller; Wow!

Nice to see my alma mater South Carolina State getting votes in the poll, gonna miss playing Coastal when you guys make the jump. Also, NCCU got a couple votes in the STATS Top 25 poll, it'd be nice to break in for the first time as a D-I school.

It was a good weekend for CFB in the state of Illinois. My Illini looked dominant against an awful Kent State team, and Northworstern beat a ranked Stanford team!

SIU also nearly beat Indiana, only losing by a point and putting up just shy of a billion yards of offense. Had they won it would have been just about a perfect day of football.

Well, I clearly couldnt have had a worse opening week(end). CU loses to Hawaii and due to some bonehead officiating that can't place the ball on the ground. Thank you ESPN (lord i hate ESPN) for the reference to the 5th down against Missouri. I was still living in Mississippi when that happened, so how is that relevant.

USM loses to State, but covered. State is not a very good football team I'm afraid. 1st and goal from the 1, and no TD? would have made a huge difference. Oh well, on to week 2. At least I still have the Broncos in pointy football (hat tip Don) land.

Rant of the Week: Game times (controlled by TV of course) have been ridiculously early/late for some teams. Dtown maybe you can tell us what you feel about being in Hattiesburg and the game wasn't over until well past midnight. West coast teams are at a distinct disadvantage playing out east. Stanford had to play at 9 am PST (Oregon St does this week), not the reason they lost, but that's too early.

    Games of the Week:

#1 Ohio State v …nevermind, the Buckeyes schedule until the end of the season is a cakewalk. They got Hawaii, Northern Illinois, and Western Michigan coming up.

#7 Oregon at #5 Michigan State. Ducks won in Eugene last year, but expect Sparty to get revenge. Vernon Adams will keep Oregon humming on O, but they lost too many starters off an average defense. MSU cannot afford a loss this early for their playoff hopes.

Iowa at Iowa State. How great is an arch-rivalry game in week 2? They should call this the Hotseat Bowl, because the losing coach is going to start feeling the heat. Going with Lax's boys.

#19 Oklahoma at #25 Tennessee. Butch Jones has done a nice job in rebuilding the Vols, and they certainly have a chance at home. However, I'll take the Sooners.

#14 LSU at #25 Mississippi State. MSU with the big advantage of already playing a game, while LSU is opening their season. The loser is already going to be behind the 8-ball in conference play, so this isn't your normal week 2 matchup. Tough to call since LSU is a bit of a wildcard, the cowbells will be a ringing, but will take the Tigers to eek out a W.

    Upset Alert:

North Carolina Central at Duke… Okay, not really, but hope Dynamo calls a game where the kids give the Blue Devils all they can handle.

#22 Arizona at Nevada. Yep I'm a Debbie Downer on my Cats. Don't think we should be ranked, and there is a reason few teams from bigger conferences agree to travel to Reno. Hope I'm wrong.

Some quick takeaways from Week 1:
Penn State hasn't learned anything. Burying the Temple game tape under the practice field just shows they still think it's appropriate to cover up their embarrassments.:)
Texas has named a new play caller after just one week. Um, what were the Spring and Fall camps for? According to Strong, he was told they'd changed the offense and then in week 1 they saw the same stuff. As head coach, shouldn't he have known what they were working on?
The SEC has 10 teams ranked after 1 week. Is it overkill? Absolutely. Miss St, Tennessee and Mizzou are all suspect at this point. The good news for the rest of the country, there's a good chance 2 of those fall out after this weekend. I don't think Arizona St should have fallen all the way out.

So now this week. My Ags open the fully renovated Kyle Field this week against Ball St, so no need for a pick this week.

Oregon @ Michigan State - I'll take Sparty by a td at home. Dantonio has now seen this offense and they'll face a more simplified version in Adams' 2nd start than what they faced v Mariota. Additionally, the Ducks look worse defensively each year since Kelly left and they're on the road.

Iowa @ Iowa State - Not much to go on in this one, so I'll take the more impressive week 1 win...and that belongs to Iowa. Lax's team in a very close one.

Oklahoma @ Tennessee - Zero U struggled in MACtion for a half last week before rolling a pretty solid Akron squad. The Vols gave up double digit plays of over 20 yds and 433 passing yds against Bowling Green. I think it's that defense that costs them and the Sooners get the W in a shootout.

LSU @ Miss St - They say teams improve the most between week 1 and week 2 and LSU didn't get a week 1. With a new qb, an offense that only scored 4 td's in their last 48 drives in the SEC, and the loss of Chavis/a new dc, I think LSU is going to be really hurt by last week's cancellation. I'm not big on Miss State either. While Prescott is back, they lost a lot from last year and their defense was hot garbage against So Miss. But the belldogs are at home and have a game under their belts and I think that'll be enough to carry them to a close win. I think when we get to the end of the season, this game will turn out to have been for 6th in the SEC West.

Upset Alert - Technically MSU over LSU is an upset (LSU -5) but I know in the land of Joe, conference foes and spreads under a td don't count, so I'll pick another one. I looked at Notre Dame (-11) at Virginia, Houston at Louisville (-12.5), and Rice @ Texas (-14.5). Living 90 miles south of the tire fire in Austin, that one was tempting, especially since I'm not sure Texas can score 14 pts. But I just can't pull the trigger on any of those, so I'm going to stick to my backyard this week.

Kansas St at UTSA (+17)- The Cats lost their starting qb on the opening drive of the game last week. Their backup has never been a starter in hs or college. While K St fields a better defense than Arizona, they only manage 147 passing and 185 rushing yds against FCS South Dakota. The Roadrunners are capable on both sides of the ball, benefit from playing Arizona tight two years in a row and are at home. I like their chances for the shock upset. Plus, karma should be on their side given the Kansas State band's fellatio inspired performance of the "Starship Enterprise" ;) fighting a "space monster.";) Right?

I hate the Iowa-Iowa State game. If we win, we were supposed to since Iowa State is one of the worst Power 5 conference teams out there. If we lose, we effing lost to Iowa State and their miserable fans.

Can't argue too much with Matt on these picks:

Agree 100% on Sparty. I love people saying "but W. Mich put up points on that defense." Right. because that mattered. Mich St was working the last three weeks preparing for week 2, not week 1.

Going Iowa. because lax just posted.

Agree on pretty much everything with OU/Vols. Though, I think OU wins comfortably.

Miss St/LSU. after sitting there for 4 hours last week and watching the replay, one thing is for sure. Ms State has lost a lot from last year. Dak looked terrible. USM should have had at least 10 more points. With all that being said, I think LSU is more lost than State and the cowbells will be clakin' and State wins a close one between two not-so-good SEC teams.

Upset Alert: Hawaii. Did you see what the did to CU????? Just joking. I"m taking the Utah St Aggies.

    WHAT QB Dilemma!????
I was really pleased it was a clean hit on their QB but I would rather he wasn't injured at all. Would have been a better result.
I think I am going to enjoy this season. I refuse to be a stereotype Buckeye fan as too many of them are indeed obnoxious assholes*. But I am really going to enjoy the on-field play.
On the Bucks, I'll let some good articles speak for me:
I'm not an Ohio State fan, but I'm in love with Ohio State
Pretty much sums it up. I wish I had bookmarked something I read last week where some guy complained Meyer left his old schools in the hole because he cant recruit worth a shit. Yeah, right.
*ADDED* Note the comments devolve into typical Buckeye fan bashing.. some are funny, incl the thread started by:
"I’ve been a student at OSU for about 8 years now, and things only get real bad if we lose...."
    ****
See where Terrell Pryor joined the legion of Buckeye QB's flunking out as pros. This is a positive on OSU, far as I'm concerned, but we may finally see that end with this crop.
    ****
At first the ND/Texas result pissed me off. Then I realized how delicious it will be later in the season when they get upset. Remember I am torn because I really like their HC from his Cincinnati days. Same goes for Mich State. I just REALLY despise ND.

    * Consider: the overlay fan demographic for OSU is Browns and some Steelers Fans

Buckeye fans in Chicago definitely have an 'obnoxious asshole' reputation. They tend to be the fans that call in to sports talk shows to argue with the hosts if they aren't getting the requisite amount of 'love' on their show. Also, as a visiting Illini fan some 15 years ago I received a fair amount of abuse from some of their fans (and I was a kid at the time...). But we did manage to win that game in Columbus, so I enjoyed it.

I'm also a ND hater, and have never enjoyed Kelly's projectile saliva in your face style of coaching.

This week my Illini play another cupcake, which is really no fun. Avoiding a shock upset is the name of the game. My OSU Beavers also have a tough game in the Big House. I don't have a lot of hope for this one since we'll be starting a freshman QB, and this is pretty much a must win already for Harbaugh.

Elsewhere I'll be hoping MSU (and their classy fans) can beat Oregon (aka THTPKB - 'The House That Phil Knight Built").

Well, I gotta give you that. I tend to ignore that there's about 20 hours of Post/Pre Game on Columbus radio a week. And about 8 hours on 6 to midnight tv.
    - Lol.. that's practically de riguer for old timey football.

But.. my old essay on here still holds.

    Follower not a fan

    - lol... OFF TOPIC, summat...had to search that on here, but look what showed up when I searched it on Google

My dad spent a semester at Notre Dame during WWII in the PL1 program (forerunner of ROTC). The PL1 guys attended all the football games together and rooted for the other team. After it snowed before the last game of the season, they were surprised to find when they arrived at the stadium that someone had shoveled off their seats. Until the Notre Dame fans started throwing snowballs at them ... :)

So ... rooting against Notre Dame is a family tradition.
