Has Anybody seen this movie yet? Its open in select cities so I havent been able to see it. If you are a liberal you will probably like this movie and if you are a Republican you will hate it.

I haven't read a thing about this movie, but if they're going to claim America today is the second coming of the Third Reich, I'll pass. I don't like this President and I don't like his policies, but Hitler he ain't. And I'm tired of hard leftists or delluded, hard-core Democrats trying to convince me otherwise. I wish the political debate would rise above silly ad hominem attacks (on both sides of the aisle). I feel like I'm perpetually in the 3rd grade.

The only thing I would to like to see is how they these movie-makers define how America started off "free." Let's see almost an entire race was in slavery and more than half the population couldn't vote. And that's not really counting women in that last sentence. Yeah, freedom's just another word for nothing else to lose.

    A) Nice points, Heather (especially with the "Me & Bobby McGee" reference).
    B) I agree--I've had it with Bush-bashing. It's become so cliche and tired--no, he's not a very good president, but while he's made some tremendous mistakes, it's not like he's been prez during the easiest time in America's history!
You have so many people screaming and shouting at the government, but nobody ever actually tries to do anything or make any changes. They're satisfied with hearing their own voices and that's about it--so many people complained like hell both times Bush was elected, and many, many of those were people who didn't even vote in the first place! If that's our only avenue for change, it's time to start becoming educated on issues and making a real difference with the sole voice we have--voting! So-called "documentaries" and the like will never get anything done, save allowing smug, self-satisfied pot-stirrers to pat themselves on the back for absolutely nothing.

    Agreed
Republicans= stupid, corrupt, mistake after mistake
Democrats= probably just as stupid, not quite as corrupt, no plan just banter

I don't know these midterm elections will be the first I can vote in and I will but the options are rather depressing. I've already decided on the independent candidate for Minnesota Governor and no this ones not a wrestler. As for the national elections we'll see

Doesn't matter what the letter is next to the name. You just have to vote for the person you think is the best for the position.

BTW, everything you said about the Reps applies equally to the Dems, just look at "The Honorable" William Jefferson from New Orleans. It's just that the Reps are in the positions to make the deals, so they get noticed more. Switch the aisles up and the same thing happens.

I know I sound jaded, but it's not as bad as it seems. The office I work in is very bipartisan, the Dems and Reps work in same exact office suite (pretty small, too). However, the Committee I worked on before we got on pretty well, but there is no way we would share office space.

Yes I agree. There something about people in power turning corrupt. How often have you heard about a brave rebel, man of the people, revolutionary topple an oppressive third world government, come to power and become just as corrupt or more. He then does the same things; uses fear, henchman to kill opponents, rape their daughters and wife’s, rob the country of what natural resources it has, set up a few Swiss bank accounts and live a pleasured life. Cycle just always goes on and on. Examples are endless from Mungabi to Hussein.

    Meaning:
"If you're Liberal, you already drink the Kool-Aid and accept unsupported charges and spin."
While ignoring rich history of Tammany and Daley machines.. 'A vote is only worth the tribute it brings in"

If you're REALLY a mainstream Republican.. you're going to hate it sure.. because you're tarred with the same brush, from either side, as anyone else.

And you cant say much while backing Voinovich and Spector..

Fortunately I am no longer a mainstream Republican in any way.. and I can laugh at the pitiful attempts to compromise with idiocy and I can harp at the influence peddling and pandering that seems to occupy most of the timeand effort on both sides.

If the old Democrat paradigm no longer works for them, how the hell can it work for Republicans.. answer it cant and wont.

    And WHAT'S IN A NAME!!!

What is the first thing to go in any Fascist Regime?

Freedom of Expression! Starting with 'Freedom of Speech'!

Well, we still have the 'speech' part, dont we?

But we cant express our religion in a public supported venue.. unless of course it's a MINORITY Religion.. then we are free as a bird to accomodate 'Jihad' as an expression of religion or the 'oppressed minority'... but, OH WAIT.. it's the "fascist" private citizen complaining about that which makes that uncomfortable so we MUST shut HIM up!

Now... was it the RW that made that so?

Is it .. or not... the Frustrated Liberal that advocates minority overthrow of the sitting government without apparent effect? Or makes jokes about a shot in the head for Dubya?

Where IS the 'fascism'... other than in the head of the bewildered?

Maybe if SOME read some comparative analyses.. like The First Amendment in Cross-Cultural Perspective and kept from parsing in only their OWN existing beliefs..

Wow! I'm SURE Heather knows the sickness had an earlier name: "Potomac Fever".

The Dem's formerly the arbiters of where our society went and what it did, got a lot of its platform adopted by the Republicans {We'll leave Civil Rights out of it.. as THAT went the other way}.

So they are left with very little to argue other than isolationism and welfare statism.

And, believe it or not, the old saying "Lie with pigs" applies. Cocktail Parties, where these elected chumps, believing they have the inside track on all that is right and proper slowly debase and degrade their own principles and common sense.

While some, like Kasich and Joe Scarborough evidently throw up their hands and accept outside roles in influence rather than represent those that elected them.. after all it pays better and you dont have to mouth stupid pieties to get along, socially... or make stupid compromises, either.

    RE: And WHAT

The fact that there is such thing as a mainstream republican compromises what the party sells itself on. Its a sad day when this slanderish banter makes it to the box office. I'll see this, I guess. I get forced to because all my crazier more liberal friends will be talking about it.

As much as Petty might think ;) I'm not nearly as liberal as I may sound, I just stand more firmly against the far right, and the far left makes me laugh... trim those two edges off and I'm an independent. The inconvenient truth movies... and the who killed the electric car are more effective expressions of free speech we have. They question policies of the highest level by basically challenging the extreme lobbyists that are the actual poison to our country. You can blame the influenced reps from both sides for taking kick backs, dinners, and ideas from lobbyists who support the use of fossil fuels, say smoking is good for you, and support Isreal no matter what they do, among other things.

Paid speech such as lobbyists and media conglomerates win these days.

I liked the mention of the rebel leader taking over the country and so on... this is a good point. I think that we simpletons down here dont quite understand what it takes to rule a country, especially in this day and age when the US buys revolutions and turns their backs on the leaders they placed. Once you get into power you weild a great responsibility which compromises your ability to rule over a country that you fought to change... in other words, your priorities change for the good of the poeple which was originally the good of yourself... then you change them back probably because life is short and they will eventually lose if they dont step aside.

Smokin' I aint about to make excuses for crooks of any kind..... I never liked Delay but I was VERY strong on the issue of the Texas indictments. Theyt were a joke!

I think Duke Cunningham got what was coming to him. How do you feel about William Jefferson?

But would you kindly point out the rights that have or might be taken away from you, that havent ALSO been done in previous administrations, of course.

Other than your right to knock some chick up and pay for her abortion.

Which also is a red herring... where you live, it's not likely to be outlawed.

You've ALWAYS had the right to not pray in school. You have the right to not say the Pledge.
You have the right to protest, at least protest the Conservative issues.. you, of course DONT have the right to freedom of assembly on certain campuses, if your politics arent the proper ones.

The real religio-fascists are trying to kill you but you spend all your energy tilting at RW and capitalist windmills.

Good luck in your Socialist Peoples' Caliphate!

Note I aint commenting on the 'Electric Car' or 'Smoking is good for you" throwaways because numbskull throwaways lines make me mad.

If you want to debate either, bring them up separately.

I got your answer... problem is you cant even ask the right question.
    ;)

I didnt ask a question... so how do you know its not the right one?

WJ? Anyone who hides money in thier freezer is guilty in my book.

Electric car, smokin', etc, was simply me pointing my finger at both wings because they are all human at the end of the day which means they are falible and more likely to catch the fever.

Last time I checked there were not religio fascist anywhere near me, I'm not convinced they are trying to kill me.

I might as well debate the other two, after all its friday and I'm bored.
