For those of you, who like me, are following the Gold Cup and have had trouble finding information on non-US matches Fox Sports has a nice Gold Cup Roundup page.

I watched some of the Mexico match. I was disappointed though with the venue. Don't we have enough soccer "suitable" stadiums that we can avoid making teams play in a stadium (Oakland) with a poorly grassed over infield?

Interesting Cup so far. The US and Mexico are playing younger sides. Since I don't know the other countries that well, are they doing the same or are they going for it?

The first round of group games provided several interesting results.

Group A was turned upside down with El Salvador beating Costa Rica and and Canada besting Jamaica. Group A plays again tomorrow night with El Salvador facing Canada and Jamaica facing Costa Rica. Only a tie in both matches would enable the favorites to finish first and second in this group.

CONCACAF GOLD CUP - GROUP A
    Team............P...W...D...L...F...A...Pts
    El Salvador....1...1....0...0...2...1...3
    Canada.........1...1....0...0...1...0...3
    Costa Rica.....1...0....0...1...1...2...0
    Jamaica.........1...0....0...1...0...1...0

While Group A was turned upside down Group B went to form and play again on Wednesday with the US meeting Honduras in DC and Grenada playing Haiti.

CONCACAF GOLD CUP - GROUP B
    Team...............P...W...D...L...F...A...Pts
    United States...1....1...0...0...4...0....3
    Honduras.........1....1...0...0...1...0....3
    Haiti.................1....0...0...1...0...1....0
    Grenada...........1....0...0...1...0...4....0

Group C is widely condsidered a cake walk for Mexico with the second position wide open for the taking. Guadalupe had a strong showing in the preliminary rounds and continued their good form by beating Panama in the first round of the group games. Group C plays again on Friday with Guadalupe pairing off against Nicaragua and Mexico playing Panama.

I haven't seen a lot of the rosters but from what I have heard Costa Rica brought primarily the same roster that beat the US in Costa Rica. If that is true then their first game loss is even more interesting to me. I also know Canada is missing several senior players with Dwayne DeRosario being a prime example. Outside of that I am blissfully ignorant of who the other countires are or are not fielding.

Vela and Dos Santos are both playing in England and have seen some first team action. I think that's a pretty strong strike pair.

Has anyone seen the Canadian team? I won't be able to see them because of a ridiculously obnoxious work load for a class that I must take this summer -- don't get me started on this inbred hilljack adjunct professor we have. Just because you teach at a university level does not mean that you are smart. You can be socially backwards too! I have the proof.

    Rant over.

heh.. it takes all kinds, Steve.

did I ever mention that the 'hip and sophisticated' adjunct I most despised at fledging Wright State was 'let go' shortly after I quit? He signed up with Antioch and within a year was busted for dealing.

Here's Shawn Mitchell's writeup on last night's matches.
    - There's a palpable 'hate' being built up for Referee Jair Marrufo
    - Click link to Mitchell's blog. Seems Adam Moffat is marrying Steve Lenhart's sister. The Crew is indeed family friendly. Or yank chicks just dig those weird accents.

An Antioch prof busted for drugs. Heh. Hope they enjoyed losing their certification.

Funny how this lady looks and acts like ten pounds of crap in a five pound bag. My tuition dollars at work. She is making To Kill a Mockingbird a tedious and painful exercise. That is quite a feat, when you stop and think about it.

Adu leaves U.S. team to join Benfica

WASHINGTON (AP) - Freddy Adu will not play for the United States in the remaining games of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, U.S. coach Bob Bradley said after Wednesday's 2-0 win against Honduras.

Adu scored a goal in the Americans' opening 4-0 win against Grenada on Saturday at Seattle. He had one shot on goal Wednesday and was replaced in the 64th minute by Charlie Davies.

"This will be the last game Freddy will be here for the Gold Cup," Bradley said after the game. "That was part of the arrangement from the start."

Adu will participate in the preseason with Portuguese club Benfica, which he joined in 2007. Last season Benfica loaned him to Monaco of France's Ligue 1, where he played just 169 minutes over 10 matches.

"It's important to get preseason in with your team," Adu said. "It gives you the best chance of being part of the team for the season."

Bradley said there will be no specific replacement for Adu on the U.S. roster. Because the Americans reached the final of the Confederations Cup on June 28 and were playing in back-to-back tournaments, CONCACAF allowed the United States to expand its roster from 23 to 30.

We'll ye-ahhh. Long as the stuff is made fresh. Otherwise, if it's from jars.. I prefer regular old salsa.
