With World Cup fever ramping-up, here's a story from yesteryear recently revived.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/s ... index.html

Hard to believe this was almost four years ago (jeezy, what the hell happened to the past 4 years?) While I still believe Zidane should have held back and punched-out Materazzi post-match (win or lose), thereby giving his side a chance to win, I somehow still respect his stance on this issue (Google what is suspected to have been exchanged between the two if you don't know - myriad interpretations exist, however, the majority reveal Materazzi is a Grade-A a$$hole, but we already knew that).

Maybe Roy could've enticed Zidane to the Cottage if he hadn't retired (hahahahahaha - but I had to say it!)??????

Zidane = the greatest player I have ever seen play in a televised live match. (I am only 32 tho...)

Anyway - Italy knew he could be taken out of it by getting in his head. They did that and won a World Cup because of it.

I am still waiting to find someone that has the Zidane movie.

I have a real dislike for the Italian National Team - this incident is just one of several reasons why.

Materazzi is a total bitch. Look at his crying as he is going down - pussy.

Doubt Materazzi cares at all about an apology. The apology is owed to his teammates, coaches, and French citizens.

And it was such a brilliant move by Materazzi, not blatant cheating like Maradona, that he pretty much mentally ass-raped Zidane in front of the world on its biggest stage.

For those few moments, when they hoisted the trophy, and forever in World Cup history, Materazzi has actually made Zidane his bitch.

You can understand why Zidane would not apologize.

Well, perhaps I'm just cynical, but I'm looking at this as Zidane saying, "Hello! It's World Cup time. Remember me? Meeeeeeeeeee?"

    Yesterday's argument; yesterday's man.

Jens, Zidane was brilliant. One of the benefits, however, of being 63 rather than 32 is that I saw Charlton, Best, Law, Cruyff, and Pele all play live in front of me -- although Cruyff and Pele were playing in the old NASL and were a little past it.

It reminds me of when I first started getting into the game and older guys would tell me, "Yes, Charlton's great, but you never saw DiStefano or Milburn or Puskas or Stanley Matthews."

I dont doubt it. I suppose greatness dies with time and the memories leave with those that carry them.

I think I like Zidane so much because he was no nonsense. He showed up and played with amazing vision and focus - and yet he was no pretty boy or twinkle toes...

I dont know that he is drawing attention to himself - I think the media is drawing attention to him. If he was a media hog he would not have gone into near seclusion over the last 4 years.

One world cup win doesnt come close to touching the life and legacy of the great player that is Zidane. Plus - to be forced to claim victory by 'mentally ass raping' the opponent due to the fact that you are unable to out play or out class him... I consider it embarrassing and disgusting. But - so is the Italian way.

Maybe that is what they should be the new slogan for the Italian's version of the FA:

"Embarrassing and Disgusting - It's the Italian Way!"

When I first heard of Materazzi, someone told my then-fairly neophyte footy self to think of one name in American sports as a comparison -- Dennis Rodman.

What a horse's ass he was, but you have to admit, he got into Zidane's head. Who knows what else he said to him that day. Zizou knew better.
