Looks like Viduka came for talks and a medical today. Good free transfer I think. Especially if he doesn't have to play every day.

Back to our earliest speculations on this thread, Giles Barnes has done his knee again and will be out for several months. It's a shame, he's a great player and only 20.

Anyone think the mystery club making the offer for Damien Duff might be Fulham?

That's too bad for Barnes, and for Derby's prospect of getting something useful for him.

There's been some speculation to that effect. One thing I'll say for Duff, he hustles. I've watched Newcastle a fair amount and he's always working his tail off. I think he'd do well here.

Not so keen on the Duke, though. He's an injury waiting to happen and he showed little enthusiasm at Newcastle. Although, there are many possible reasons for that at Newcastle... Still, I'd rather see us get someone else.

You know, all this Hangeland stuff... has there been any talk from Wenger to suggest that it's all anything more than conjecture? I mean, the rumor mill all decided "Hangeland is good, Arsenal needs a center back, Hangeland had a good game and scored against Arsenal this year, therefore Arsenal will buy Hangeland," but everything directly stated by the parties involved has been "there is nothing going on here." Even in the story about Duff, Roy is quoted as saying "There has been no approach from any club for Hangeland and as a result we're expecting him to play for us this season." If Arsenal (or someone else) were as keen on the Hangman as the rumor mill has it, don't you think there would've been some action here already?

Brits are funnier than we are: Exhibit A

Evidently, Viduka is a no go, we're talking with Duff, and there have been no talks between Arsenal and Fulham about Hangeland.

Evidently, Roy has his say on the official, but I can't get to it.

Sky asked him at one of the Gooners press conferences if he would have an interest in about 4 different tall cb's, Hangeland was one of them. Arsene said yes, they rated Brede and would consider him if looking for one but hadn't talked to Fulham or the player. Every clip I've seen where Wenger comments on it have been from this same presser.

Brit football rumours seem to be akin to the gossip rags at the grocery checkout more often than not.

Roy's comments on transfers from the season preview video on the club website, as I remember them (I watched it a couple hours ago):

There has been no approach for Hangeland. Roy thinks it would be quite odd if Wenger were interested in signing him but has not yet said anything about it.

He wants to sign Damien Duff and Duff wants to come play for Fulham, but they have not yet worked out a transfer fee with Newcastle.

Mark Viduka came in for a trial, as was reported, but decided he wanted to spend more time with his family. (My reading between the lines is that he is likely to retire, or if he's going to play at all, move back to Australia and play in the A-league.) Oddly, I saw this BBC article from yesterday in which Portsmouth manager Paul Hart is quoted as claiming he signed Viduka back in June but that Viduka is AWOL.

Roy feels fairly confident with the squad we have now, but would be concerned about depth and might look to add two or three more players if we win the tie with Perm (which, he stressed, is not a foregone conclusion).

Everyone is healthy, with the exception of Davies (who is set to train with the first team come Monday) and Kallio (who's picked up an Achilles injury).

Stephen Kelly had a fairly easy transition into training with the team, having spent a few years in the Premier League already; Bjorn Helge Riise took longer to settle in.

No other transfer targets or players who might be leaving were discussed by name, as far as I recall.

I'd be happy with Duff. Just find it funny we are being linked with current or former Magpies all of a sudden. Do we need that kind of karma? Ameobi next? (blek)

Ameobi scored a hat trick against Reading today. Who knows, that might put him ahead of Bobby Z...

I see Duff as an upgrade over Julian Gray.

I know we've missed out everybody and their brother, but for gods sake let's hope this Killen is is some kind of cruel joke. I'd rather suffer with Zamora than wwatch him sign.

Chris Killen, New Zealand international and Celtic striker?

Hopefully with Duff's signing (once complete) Clint can go to the right and Gera to the bench until Davies returns.

Yes, the Chris Killen who plays for Celtic. He's rubbish. He scored 16 in 25 games for Hibs one season, but I can stick a rock up top for Hibs and that rock will score at least 10 goals. Hibs score goals and he just happened to put alot away. Seriously hope this is a joke.
