"you sing when you're rowing; you only sing when you're rowing" -- traditional put down of Fulham fans.

I can tell you that there are times that I hear our away fans louder and stronger in GJ broadcasts than I hear our home fans. The core group of travelers seems to be 16-30 or so, and they really seem to be into it.

Yeah, HatterDon, I have noticed that also this season. It seems that our visiting fans seem to be loud, and I cleary hear them, but when we are at home, a lot of times, I hear the visiting supporters more.

It's all crap how they judge these things and as usual the media picks on us for being the 'little guys'. Ask anyone who has visited The Cottage, and sat in the Hammersmith end (prefererably at the back), and they will tell you it is loud!

Either that or travel away with Fulham...now that is fun.

I agree with Mike. The noise is shattering in the back of the Hammersmith End and the Fulham fans as a whole get behind the Whites well at home. Can't say Fulham has given them much to cheer for this season, but still they sing and shout at the top of their lungs.

    ...NOISE...

...there are a number of factors in my opinion, I have listed them in no particular order as they are all relevant:-

    1) Fulham FC Season Ticket Holders that do not have allegiance to the club. Because it is a friendly and mostly trouble free ground to visit, and because it is easier to get a season ticket (if you can afford it) at Fulham rather than at Walham Green Dog Track FC (WGDTFC - the filth) we have many Season Ticket Holders that follow premiership football - but not necessarily Fulham FC. Added to that London based fans of all the other premiership clubs but a ST to see their club play Fulham, and sell or give away their tickets for games that do not include the big 6 teams.

They, and who they lend/sell their tickets to do not know the songs/chants, and they are not 'tribal' in their desire to repeat them.

    2) Stewards. The stewards at the club are employees of a contractor. They follow the letter of the law regarding the rules of standing to a draconian level, ejecting Fulham fans for minor misdemeanors without indulging in social skills of understanding and talking to home fans like they are human beings (and paying customers) - however, only at Fulham parts of the ground, so the away fans are mostly allowed to contravene these laws with impunity.

Home fans once ejected could potentially be banned from the team thatt they love for life. This affects the atmosphere and noise levels.

    3) Gap at the back of the Hammersmith End. Right at the back of the Hammersmith End is a huge gap between the rear wall of the stand and the roof, From the 'UU' seats you can look over the concourse below and the toilets (johns). The Noise gets dispersed into this void and makes what noise generated disappear into the ether.

If we survive relegation, the new plans for the ground should kick in, and the void atthe back of the Hammersmith End will hopefully be 'filled in' then we should hear some noise - as long as sky and the BBC don't deliberately position their microphones towards the away fans...

Acoustics can't be overlooked. Michigan Stadium aka 'The Big House' that is filled w/105,000 every Sat. is often regarded as one of the quietest stadiums in America, and not because the fans aren't into it, but because of the design of it. Qwest Field, home of my Seattle Seahawks was designed specifically to make sure the noise of the Kingdome wasn't lost when moving to an outdoor stadium (didn't hurt that the billionnaire Paul Allen focused in on the acoustics). When the 12th man is into it, there is a feeling of being on a tarmac and a 747 roaring past you.

I've always thought the microphones pick up the noise alot better from the away end when watching on tv, even when you knew the Hammy End was rocking.

I wonder how they determined that we are the quietest fans? Did they actually measure the noise in decibels at each stadium? I doubt it. What a bunch of sh*te.

I know what you mean about stadium design. I've been to several Colts games in the dome and that place gets so loud, you barely hear the person next to you, even if they yell. And no, they don't pipe in crowd noise :)
