    Wynalda Unplugged!

Some very interesting insights on MLS and the US team coaches, past and possible, from the only guy who's scored more US goals than McBride.

Great article! PCB is probably the best drunken interviewer of our time.

A little surprised to see that, at the time I read it, 56% of the people chose the "edited" version.

Anyhow, everybody, go to the home page and read the article!

I nagged the @$# out of him to write an article.. and it so happened that...

Now the REST of you get off your ##$#$ asses, or you can bleep my bleep.

    {that's my topical humor, folks.. you have to read the interview}

And i had no idea that the 'net nanny' extended to the web site, not just the forum, or I wouldnt have gone to all the trouble. But I'll leave the edit version up a while to see what the hits are.

By the way, I dont necessarily agree with everything Waldo says in there {and I'm SURE PCB doesnt} but there's ONE thing I never saw discussed about MLS marketing {maybe it was, a long time ago and I forgot} but I agree with Waldo, it is a small but critical part where they are shooting themselves in the foot.

What I'm wondering is what will happen when Jim Rome hears what Waldo said. Ah... screw him, I hope Rome assaults him and Waldo decks him!

Good question, Mike. I was going to the US v. Ecuador match with my buddies anyway, and I had been thinking about doing an article for FUSA, 90:00 Soccer Magazine, and/or another publisher some time soon. I was considering writing an article just about our experience going to, surrounding, and about the match itself. Then one of the guys I was going to the match with, Jon Mayes, mentioned that Stone and Wynalda would be at a charity auction the night before the match organized by a friend of his who lived in Tampa and knows Stone.

Wynalda was extremely accomodating with giving the interview, and there is no doubt that he has thought about the issues and is quite passionate about soccer in the U.S. I just wish we had gotten a few better pictures.

    Thanks Guys!

And btw.. Tom's due some props...I consulted him throughout. I {and PCB} dont just do this stuff in the dark, you guys.

Reason no one else knew is for the element of surprise. Sort of an early 'Easter Egg'

Thanks, Tom! Surprisingly, while I had thought about quite a few of these questions before, I did not have any of them written down, nor did I know how I was going to layout the interview. But that is a testament to Eric Wynalda. The guys is so passionate that it infects those around him. Him and I were just feeding off each others energy and really trying to have an earnest and frank discussion about many U.S. soccer issues.

It was something I will certainly never forget. And you guys are the bomb for printing it!

Fantastic interview/experience PCB! The only other name that comes to mind that speaks with Wynalda's utter frankness is Johnny Miller. I was in the car the day he called in to Rome's show (not a scheduled interview) and he was great. Thought his comments on the US coaching situation very interesting, great stuff.

Great article PCB. The quote on Klingsmen is particularly interesting.

Wynalda sure dosen't give a damn about keeping or making friends.

that was a great read. i've always admired wynalda for being very opinionated, even though i don't necessarily always agree with him. I also loved watching him as a player. interesting to see his comments on Donovan and then to see Donovan play so well in that Ecaudor match. anyone see what he said after?

Also like to add that his comments on the English game provoke thought. I myself am finding that I'm getting English soccer fatiuge. The sheer amount that I've watched seems to have me just sick of it and enjoying Champions Leauge, Italian, Mexican, and American games more. Sort of odd but recently if it dosen't involve Fulham I'm having a hard time getting up for the EPL. It couldn't have been more different just a few months ago. Perhaps just a temporary phase?

I'm sure it's just a phase... like I felt on my first exposure, in the nineties:

"Gee, they're great at banging the ball around the midfield, and those passes are dead on... but arent they supposed to shoot once in a while?"

Things are different now, but still the same... sorta.
