    From today's BBC rumour site:

Arsenal will release defender Sol Campbell if they receive the right offer, with Newcastle, Fulham and Inter Milan all interested. (Daily Express)

If he wants to stay in London, it looks like we're it.

What's the scoop on him? If we got him, I'd assume we'd spend the money we get for Steed (essentially, a trade from our standpoint). Is he better or worse than Steed?

He is a very experienced center defender. Just last week Fenerbahce was offering 8.5 million pounds for him. I do not know why Arsenal would accept much less than that for him if they can get that from the Turkish side.

Additionally, his wages I would think would be quite atronomical. I would think he is already making at least 50,000 pounds per week, probably more to be quite honest with you and I do not see him wanting to take a huge pay cut just to stay in London.

One last thing, any time Newcastle and Inter Milan are after the same player as us, chances are the money will be better there and thus we will find our way out of the running. I hope people do not think I am being a pessimist, but I would say the chances of Sol Campbell dawning the Black and White of Fulham next year is about 1%. There is a chance, albeit a very small one.

I don't think you're being pessimistic on this one, Tom. I'd rate the chances of Campbell joining FFC as zero. There's an awful lot of journo 'kite flying' on this one - and the Fulham 'interest' stems from a particularly unlikely piece of speculation by a tabloid journalist who I wouldn't trust to tell me what day it was......... Campbell is on 4 million pounds a year basic wages plus bonus - way, way out of our league. I'm not sure if Arsenal have even stuck a price tag on him yet, but if they want him off the books they might have to give a bit on the asking price, bearing in mind he still has a couple of years to run on his contract. Can't see him going overseas - and certainly not the cauldron that's Turkish football - as he's a bit of a homeboy by all accounts. There's only a small handful of Prem clubs that could consider the sort of package he would want (even if he did downsize his wage demands) and we're not one of them. Having expended a lot of effort getting the big wage earners of the FFC books, it would require a quantum backflip from Mo to even consider financing a package for Campbell. The ONLY way there would be any chance would be if Arsenal let him go on a free and Sol takes a big wage cut. Can't see it - and would have to say that he's not the player he was.
