Time to kick off this thread as the season begins this weekend - that really crept up on me. Headed out to the 'Quakes opener on Sunday. Also read that the Sounders are close to bringing in Obafemi Martins from Levante, which would be a good signing.

Way to get it started Nev.

So psyched for this season. Timbers face the Energy Drinks tomorrow in Porterland at 7:30pm on ESPN 2. Former French national team teamates Henry and Silvestre will likely go up against each other.

Today's matchups are Philly v Sporting KC, Vancouver v Toronto, Houston v DC (on NBCSN at 8pm), Dallas v Colorado, Seattle v Montreal, and Chivas v Crew.

Cant believe the way Philly is handling Adu, lowering his market value by announcing he is not in their plans. I also think now that they have some guys who can actually finish in LeToux and Casey, it is just plain stupid not to keep Adu in your plans considering the service he provided last year. Despite loosing Espinoza and Kamara, KC is still going to be one of the best teams in the league with Feilhaber, Zusi, and Convey in the midfield to create for Sapong, Bunbury, and Saad.

I predict Vancouver's acquisition of Reo-Coker will be a train-wreck similar to the Robson acquisition of last season.

Chivas USA - haha that's a thread of its own.

I predict Houston will win the MLS Cup and Portland will qualify for the playoffs

    Go Timbers!!!!

Chivas' first game was a disaster. Reported attendance was @ 7,000 but apparently the actual was 4,900 and 2100 of those were free tickets - FOR OPENING DAY! They also got whooped on by the Crew, including a goal from Cleveland native Josh Williams. Total schadenfreude for me on this one.

Portland v Bad tasting Energy Drinks was a classic. Porter's side comes back from a 3-1 deficit to draw 3-3, saving Porter from a debut disaster because his decision to start Silvestre is seriously questionable as he was blame worthy in two of NY's goals. Silvestre had just arrived in town on Thursday after finally getting his Visa sorted. However, Silvestre was also clearly contributing out there and only improved as the game wore on so I'm sure Porter will back him 100% and all the problems will be fixed by the next match. Portland's attack looks very dangerous with Valeri, Nagbe and the Johnson's. Will Johnson appears to be the type of player that would chew his arm off for the team.

There are tens of thousands of Chivas fans living in out here, but the problem is they are Chivas de Guadalajara supporters that have zero connection to the team that plays at the HDC. It was originally supposed to be filled with some promising youngsters and aging superstars from GDL, but that never happened. It's not working, and it's time for a move (St. Louis??)

Crazy game in Portland. Silvestre got thrown into fire and what a nightmare first 20 minutes. Have to give Ricketts a little culpability on the first goal since he brain cramped and tried to pick up a back pass that he wasn't expecting. Going to take awhile to get it all together, but Portland should a lot of fun to watch, and as usual the atmosphere was off the charts in the Rose City. highlights:

Joe, I think Ricketts reached with his hands because he was expecting Silvestre to hold off the defender so he could pick it up. Misjudgment on both sides. To Porter's defense, I dont know how much choice he had but to start Silvestre. The other options are either injured or an MLS rookie. If he had started the rookie, it is likely similar mistakes would have happened only the rookie is more likely to fall completely apart.

Yes award the Chivas franchise to St. Louis, Cleveland, Fargo, heck any town in the United States would draw a bigger crowd on opening day. This is what Garber says about Chivas. I know this will come as a shock, but what he says really pisses me off. The fact that MLS is giving Chivas so much help after how the powers-that-be destroyed the successful team that was being built here in Cleveland. And yes, St. Louis has a great soccer history, blah blah blah. However, they were awarded a pro soccer franchise and they couldnt make it work.

Me and the lil' man attended opening night for the 'Quakes last night. The atmosphere was great, and the hype for next year's new stadium was in full bloom, however, the actual soccer part of the deal, yeah the footie, left something to be desired by San Jose. Gordon and Lenhart were missed as was Dawkins and SJ blew some good chances. 2-0 wasn't surprising but RSL didn't dominate either. And, that Kyle Beckerman guy, being the first time I'd seen him live, is a proper footballer. He earns his call-ups to the USMNT (not that he should ever see the pitch, though, but that's another story...), b/c he quietly played his game with class. In the end, a disappointing loss for SJ to open the season. Oh yeah, Bernardez is a beast. SJ will most likely lose him this summer if MLS can't resist a solid bid.

Nice that you and the lil' one made opening day. Sorry for the result but it's early. Thanks for sharing about Beckerman. One thing I've noticed is that watching soccer in person can make a big difference in your opinion of players.

In the bad news department, Jay Demerit suffered a torn achilles tendon in his opening game. I hope this is not the end to his career, but somehow I dont think so.

LD was pretty much a non-factor. Scuffed a golden opportunity within the first minute of coming on. One additional note: upon entering, Todd Dunivant immediately handed over the captain's armband, it what appeared (to me at least) a very choreographed gesture of support of LD.

As for Villarreal - the kid's impressive. The Goals on Sunday crew were just speculating about how quickly he gets a senior MNT call-up. The Gold Cup is probably the best time for that.

FC Dallas is off to a great start (5-1-1), and beat LA 1-0 on a late George John header, unfortunately some moron decided that he wanted to celebrate by throwing a beer bottle onto the pitch...which of course hit John  I can remember that he was going to go to Blackburn, but that fell through (might have been work permit problems)

He had a long trial with West Ham and they weren't interested.

Portland are the only team in MLS that has yet to lose on the road. That's something considering they had the worst road record in MLS last season. And that was one exciting game.

In other news, Bruce Arena manages a win v RSL despite not having his star attackers on the field. LA has got to be the deepest team in MLS

I went to the Dynamo/Rapids game on Saturday. Did a little tailgaiting prior to the game with my 4.5 year old daughter. I've got a 1973 Bronco that is burnt orange with a white top, tailor made for the Dynamo (colors) so got to chit chat with a lot of folks. And...those my friends were the highlights of this day of football. Well..ok, there were a few bright spots in the game, but not many. Dynamo goal was a nice stike. The fact I made it the full 90 with my daughter was a mircle. Also, been a long time since I've seen the Dynamo lose at home.

Nicely done on the full 90 (and the classic Bronco as well - does it have the removable hard top?).

My 3.5 year old and 2+ year old have made it to the 70th minute at the Quakes...once. I can't wait until they can make a whole match - need to slip them some more sugar at halftime!

My daughter is like a pinball...just can't sit still...sugar may make it worse for me. Given the time we sat in the parking lot, it makes even that much more unlikely we lasted the whole game.

Dynamo finally got some sense. They used to have only two parking lots, decicated to season ticket holders, for tailgaiting (could not do it elsewhere). They opened up to non-season ticket holders (like me) this year (probably because the lots were not being fully utilized). I can see my attendence going up a bit.

Bronco has a removable top but I have not removed it yet. I want to install a cage in it and when I do, I will pull the lid. Sits next to my 1974, RHD MG in the garage. Daughter calls them Beauty and the Beast.

Sweet - thanks for the response. My uncle had a circa 73 Bronco (mint green color) that he'd let me use when I was 16 or 17 and my younger cousin and I drove the &%$ out of that thing in the mountains / country. It was a sweet cruiser with the top off.
