Watched the match -- you think WE got troubles -- Mckennie picked up a stupid yellow in the first couple of minutes and was subbed out on the half hour. Schalke were in the process of being blown out and their coach decided to make radical change. It was 4-0 at the half and 4-4 in the final. This is akin to us having a 4-0 over QPR at home and blowing it. If Dortmund has the same manager for their next match, I'll be shocked.

Pulisic, by the way, was not playing the forward line until very late in the game when he became their ONLY attacker. Waste of his talents. Did I mention their manager should get the can?

Dortmond/Schalke was a weird game and won't be on either Americans highlight reel. Dortmond was very lucky to walk away with a draw after taking the 4-0 lead. I thought Schalke could have scored about 6 in the second half.

Don't know how many of you watched it, but Forest's 4-2 FA Cup victory over Arsenal today featured a Man of the Match performance by Eric Lichaj. Solid defense throughout and TWO GOALS. The second was as sweet as you'll ever see from a striker.

I wonder if anybody with the national team noticed.

I caught part of the end of it. Arsene was none too happy in his banished perch up in the stands. Makes me all the more disappointed in our performance against a side nowhere near Arsenal in talent. Nice to see one of those infamous FA Cup upsets on the underdog's pitch, though.

At one point of the match -- after he'd scored his brace -- he smoothly stripped the ball off an Arsenal striker and passed upfield. The TV announcer said "Lichaj doing his day job." Loved it.

From the sounds of it, it was the lack of US leadership that led Gonzales to leave. If someone had a clue and just gave the kid a call in November when he felt slighted about not receiving one we likely not be here. It doesn't a rocket scientist to figure out an 18 year old kid playing and having success in the country that is recruiting him to switch needs to be told he's an important part of the US future. It might be too late, but there should be a contingent heading to Monterrey, Pulisic & McKennie on face time and make a last ditch effort to change his mind back.

I happened to be in a position to watch the draw for the next round. Some tasty ties featuring some tiny venues like Huish Park (Yeovil Town) and Rodney Parade (Newport County), where ManUre & Spuds must go, respectively. Between the two, it appears Spuds are the more likely to stub their toe. Don't see ManUre having much trouble with the lowest placed side left in the tournament, but Newport beat Leeds to advance, and Spuds have been known to choke defensively a time or two in such situations, so we'll see. Kane is a beast, though, and if he's fit, he'll probably start, and could well be the difference. But he needs service, and if Newport can pressure their mids, could be interesting.

Ignorance here. What is the guy's position?

Good news that Bayern thought enough about him to turn down a transfer bid from Barca

The pic I saw he was wearing #10 for Bayern reserves. His bio says he plays left wing as well. I guess his little brother Malik (a forward at Bayern's academy) already is playing for our youth setup.

The fact is that the very best place for young talent to blossom is in Germany. It's not just Christian; the man who will very soon be the best damn Dembele in the world was blooded at Dortmund as a teenager. Imagine a side fighting for a European slot not only fielding two teenagers, but having one of them take all corners -- left and right footed -- while doing so.

That Dembele is gone to a Spanish club nobody's ever heard of, but there have routinely been three teenagers in this season's Dortmund squads. The Germans have the strange point of view that if a player is smart enough, talented enough, coachable enough, fast enough, and creative enough, he can play regardless of age or nationality.

Every young talent in the world knows that the Bundesliga is where to go if you want to learn and play. Imagine how good Donovan would have been had he stayed in Germany.

The other good thing about being a young player in Germany is that the football played there is not nearly so violent as English football. That's why I hope Pulisic stays with Dortmund. He'll get lumps kicked off him in England, and find only two or three competitive matches a year in Spain.
