Gooch got a red card in his first match back. What exactly was he brought in to teach? o_O

Pretty sure Gooch was modeling for the youngsters on what not to do. :D

Happy retirement to the Portland Timbers' Nat Borchers, who finished his 14 year career in a perfect spot. Dude looked like a lumberjack with a beard Paul Bunyon would be jealous of. He also was a lynch pin on the Timbers' MLS Cup winner.

@encorespanish, @'Sota Dan; Minnesota keeps making news, as it appears Josh Gatt is on his way from Norway. Once upon a time Gatt highlights appeared regularly on the YA thread, blessed with pace on the level of Yedlin. Sadly, his career was curtailed by knee injuries. However, he still is only 25, so it will be interesting to see what he has left.

@SoCalJoe If Gatt has anything left in that knee, this will plug a big hole at RB and allow the gaffer's vision come to fruition...or at least the vision I saw from the 2 meaningless preseason games so far.

If I recall correctly Gatt was a winger.

You recall correctly. I misspoke because I really want the hole at RB to be filled! Wishful thinking on my part!

Not sure where to put this great news, but this thread had the most recent mention of Dempsey.

The season starts tonight with Minnesota's inaugural game versus Portland airing on FS1. Anyone other than me stoked?

If Mix is not attached to a club a league's window being closed doesn't matter does it?

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens to MLS in the post-JK era. I have been kinda luke warm to the league over time as the 7th largest city in the nation -- and one with a strong local fanbase and a football-specific stadium that can easily be doubled in capacity -- continues to be ignored. This has continued since the league decided to put a Mexican minor league side in LA rather than put a REAL expansion side in the Alamo City. How long ago was that?

Anyhow, I'll be watching as much as I can -- especially Seattle now that Deuce is back.

Hit opening night with the Quakes and they looked solid, especially in D (German, Florian Jungwirth was outstanding). Lima and Thompson, both homegrown, were fantastic. The offense had purpose and bite - and should've scored "4 or 5" as my boy claimed.

So Minnesota United has been a colossal embarrassment so far with opposing teams pouring in 11 goals in 2 games. But if any of you watched yesterday on ESPN2, this happened:

    MNUFC.jpg

Minnesotans are a crazy bunch...35,000 strong in a 28 degree snow storm, a light snow storm, but one nevertheless.

I wasn't going to bring MN up for fear of the emotional pain it might inflict on you Encore but my goodness that was a home opener to forget. I couldn't believe I was watching the Loons get taken apart in the cold and snow by Hotlanta and their South American brigade.

I was also dumbfounded how Atlanta's collection of South American players looked like they were more accustomed to the snow than our numerous Scandinavian league players.

The reasons are many as to why MNUFC are so bad through 2 games, but I'm trying not to #PANIC yet. If being a Fulham supporter has taught me anything, it's to not panic!

@terrinh73 Have you gone to any of Atlanta United's games yet? The city of Atlanta isn't exactly known as being great at supporting their pro teams, but the numbers showing up at Georgia Tech's pointy football stadium has been damn impressive (avg. 50K). Throw in their fun style of play and they have to be to best story of the young season.

From the early matches Atlanta certainly looks like one of the better MLS sides. Time will tell about the overall quality but they are going to entertain in the attacking end.
