This is not surprising, but the whole floodgates finally opening is something I couldn't imagine. The money trail will be impressive.

this morning on NPR, the reporter said that Jack Warner received a $10m bribe from South Africa's government to secure their holding the WC. The South African government confirmed the $10m, but said it was NOT a bribe.

Somewhere in writer heaven, "George Orwell is being struck by multiple orgasms."

Yeah, it was a small, charitable "donation" to the "Jack Warner Housing Assistance Fund." :)

    For you DCHeather

Apparently Oliver bought 5 minutes of air time on Trinidad & Tobago TV to counter Jack Warner doing the same thing (can't wait to see it). Speaking of Warner, BBC reported that this scumbag diverted the $750,000 Fifa gave for Haitian relief after the earthquake and dispersed the funds to his 70+ bank accounts.

May be that only you and I know what you're talking about there. However YOU seem to assume he would be filled with glee. I don't think so.
Rest of you read Animal Farm. BEFORE you look at Orwell's bio.

I was talking 1984 rather than Animal Farm. But, yes anyhow.

that is rich, thanks, petty. i think, unfortunately, there are a few nuggets of truth in that story, and the whole truth probably lies somewhere between blatter's explanation and everybody else's...

Well, yeah. I'm on record here for a long time that French meddling is responsible for a ton of global injustice and 'unexpected outcomes'... WWII, Viet Nam.. anyplace their << Diplomacy >> touches, someone gets the royal shaft.

I still think we have a lot of gall to bitch about the 2022 series. There's plenty of evidence available to show that the US and England colluded in the early rounds. There was a "gentleman's agreement" for the US to drop out of the running for 2018 and England for 2022. That way each could support the other's bid and both countries would win.

Face it, there was corruption everywhere, and Platini and Blatter going away will never stop it.

@HatterDon, everyone should be bitching about Qatar. There are migrant workers being held captive in that country to build stadiums, and forced to live in piss poor conditions. The only way they seem to be able to go back to their home country is in a coffin. Again, why is there not a global boycott going?

This has been going on in the various Emirates for almost a generation -- 25 years -- and has been documented. Nobody in power really cares about how working people are treated -- certainly not in this country where we bash unions and ridicule and repeal workplace safety regulations.

If we suddenly discovered the plight of the workers because we lost a chance to host a World Cup, that would take even more gall.

I disagree. If you want to host a world event then you should be held to a global standard. Otherwise stay in the Stone Age.

Unfortunately, abusing the poor IS the global standard.

So global was the wrong word. Higher standard. Standard of most civilized nations. Whatever, you know what I meant.

Yeah, sorry about the wiseass comment. My point was that the treatment of "guest workers" in Qatar has been the way things have been done in that region for years. Protesting about it in the context of the US losing a chance to host the World Cup and ignoring it in other contexts is what gets me going.
