Pretty strong squad for these preps for the CONCACAF playoff against Mexico Oct. 10th. Deuce and Bradley will miss the Peru game in D.C., but will be added for the Brazil match in Foxboro. Sean Johnson will replace William Yarbrough as third string keeper as well. And our man Ream gets a call up! Does anybody know anything about Andrew Wooten? Oh wait, he's German-American. Never mind.

Wooten was in a couple U-23 camps during the last Olympic cycle. He has been on a tear to start this season, scoring five goals in Sandhausen's first three games (Sandhausen is in the 2. Bundesliga). Brian Sciaretta has more on him here -> http://americansoccernow.com/articles/wooten-to-asn-hopefully-i-can-showcase-my-skills

With all the injuries at fullback, I am guessing we see Geoff Cameron at RB and Ream or Garza at LB.

Nice to have a Fulham player in the USA squad again.

Kills me the Brazil match is only 20 miles from my house and I can't make it!!! Wish it had been on Monday afternoon/night instead. Wouldn't make it from work in Boston to Gillette, park, and walk in probably before 1/2 time and that would be with out any traffic. Both my engineer and myself would go but are in the same predicament. Wonder if they would mind if we just stopped and left the train full of passengers somewhere? :D

Just heard that Howard will be riding the pine as Klinsmann named Guzan his starting GK for both matches this upcoming week

Hmmm, heard on Twitter? I can't remember JK ever doing something like that before.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Guzan to start both and Timmy to come on at the start of the second half.

It was a breaking news item on SiriusXM FC but I think they said it was from Grant Wahl, but not sure if he Tweeted it or not.

Considering how great looked at White Hart Lane and getting Everton an undeserved point on Saturday it would not surprise in the least if Guzan looks bad that Timmy is called upon against Mexico. Whomever is between the sticks is going to be fine, it's the 4 guys in front of him that is concerning.

Can either Howard or Guzan play CB in front of the other who's between the sticks?

It wouldn't surprise me if Klinsmann tried it to push them out of their comfort zone.

It's amazing how before Tim Ream joined us I had no real opinion on him. Now I want him to start because he's so much better than our other CBs. :D

Ream had a very good match against Peru -- especially in the 2nd half. I was surprised to see him at LB, but he really was cool and efficient for the 90 minutes.

Meh. We ain't doin' squat without Deuce and Bradley in the mix in the near future. We'll get more answers (or maybe questions) against the Brazilians in Foxboro.

Well, perhaps, but Peru finished 3rd in the Copa America, and they made it an excellent game. I was pleased to see JK switch up the tactics in the 2nd half and turn the game around. As for Deuce and the General, perhaps, but I was pleased to see how hard Wood and Zardes worked up front.

The only disappointments for me were Orozco in the first half and Alvarado in the second. I don't see the attraction with either of them, and I wonder if the 2nd half was the first time that the entire back four was made up of CBs. Cameron and Gonzo also caught the eye, as did Besler when he came on. The game was well worth the time it took to DVR it and watch it late last night.

    Bright spots:

Once again Gyasi Zardes was a threat with the ball at his feet. He runs at defenders and at a minimum forces them to defend honestly and on a good day beats them causing the opposition defense to get stretched out of shape.

On the defensive end Ream had an excellent evening defensively and getting the ball forward out of the back. I can't recall him picking the wrong pass.

Cameron impressed coming off the bench but not as much as Besler. Besler may not be the athlete Brooks is but he is the superior center back at this point in time.

The high pressure defense the US employed in the second half.

Yes, definitely agree with that last point, Barry. I think that's the key to this whole damn game. It's risky, but I truly believe that the rewards outweigh the risks, especially since it's so bloody hard to score.

Since it seems that Cameron and Ream are considered FBs by JK, I'd like to see Gonzo and Besler as the first choice CB pairing. Although Brooks impresses me a lot, he also tunes out occasionally.

Three years from now, we'll all be arguing over who is best to pair with Carter-Vickers at CB. That kid is amazing.
