It's goal.com so who knows if there's anything to this. It's disappointing if it turns out to be true b/c I think building a base through our Academy is the best way forward to get back to the Prem and stay there once we do. If players are going to be poached so early, it's going to make that approach very difficult. If Liverpool wants Roberts, how soon before someone else comes in for Hyndman.

It would be pretty interesting if true. They buy him to put him on their books and loan him back to us for further development. Jeez, that would be sad--be a farm system for bigger teams. Please, don't tell me we already are. :(

That's the growing trend these days with the big clubs. There are lots of examples. It's almost like they're treating players like stocks. Buy low, loan them out for several years then sell high. It used to be that they'd buy them and bury them on the bench/reserves, but with the squad limitations that has changed.

The Magath Youth Strategy is being discussed across a number of threads, but you nailed it, this is the risk. If the idea is to build from within, to fashion a squad out of our own ranks, then we must, must, hang on to our talent. It does us no good to develop them and ship them off, aside from earning a Florida gentleman some money.

I realize we'll have to sell them on eventually, I'd just like to see us hang onto them long enough to hit our objectives (promotion in this case) and collect a nice payday when they go. Southampton not only won promotion with their core group, they held onto them for 2 Prem seasons while they were able to build some depth and become established. And they got a massive payday. I'd rather not see us sell off so many players at one time like they did, but their ownership situation was an extenuating circumstance.

My fear is if teams come in this early, it'll diminish our returns greatly.

I agree with Matt's assessment. The question is not if Fulham sell the players they develop the question is about the timing of any eventual sale. Fulham' s revenue streams only provide a trickle to keep the ground moist while offers that players like Roberts and Hyndman are eventually likely to receive from larger clubs will in all probability flood their pockets.

If the given in the equation is that Fulham can't compete in the wages department then the variable becomes how to keep the youth at Fulham for the optimum amount of time.
