Nope it doesn't... Never has a 2 handed spike off the goal line ever been rewarded. Simply unbelievable

Ghana did 'emselves proud. But Suarez with the play of the match.

Now, think about it.. the guy missing the resulting pk wasnt the goat, it was John Mensah.

truly heartbreaking. I really like Ghana; they deserved to go through to the semis. This is a cruel sport. The penalty and red card is not enough justice for what would have been a goal with zero time left.

And, once again, I was entertained by Harkes describing European and South American teams in terms of "organized, disciplined, [and] technically sound," while African teams have, "enthusiasm, athleticism, [and] raw talent." You have to forgive John, though. He was brought up in the American sporting environment who believed that black [and Latin] players lacked the "mental facilities" of white players.

Oh, and I'm seriously bummed about the result. I like Uruguay, mind, but Ghana deserved the win.

I think I'm gonna puke.. both from what you say Harkes said. And that you brought that up.

Mind you I thought Ghana displayed AT Least the discipline and form that Uruguay did. How about it was why they play the games.

The best dont always win.. and other than our OWN teams, of course, the team that deserves to win will win.

    heh.. everyone is still de-compressing.

I nominate Friday July 2, 2010 as "BEST DAY of the Cup: Fifa WC 2010" simply for the drama.

    Wow... what a treat.

    re: Uruguay handball.

I wouldn't mind seeing FIFA institute a goal-tending rule, ala NBA.

If a deliberate handball on or near the goal-line stops the ball from obviously crossing the goal-line (and scoring a goal), then a goal is directly awarded in lieu of awarding a penalty. Any card punishment for the offending player would be handled as usual.

Simply put, the Ghana game proved that a penalty award is not a good enough penalty for stopping the ball from crossing the line illegally. Yeah, stop a guy from taking shot by fouling him, etc. - that prevents a goal-scoring opportunity but to physically stop the ball from crossing the plane of the goal with your hand doesn't prevent an opportunity, it prevents an actual goal and should be awarded as such.

Wow that was a lot of fun to watch. Only Tevez and Di Maria looked up for it. Not sure what was better, watching the Argentina players whine when 4 GUYS were 5 yards offside, Maraphony w/his hands clasped looking hopless and clueless, or the overall play of Germany.

The Euros have told the South Americans that it ain't their party anymore. Spain knocks out Paraguay later and the team that had to squeak by Costa Rica in a playoff just to get in would be the only one left.

Well... I was in and out all morning and I was gonna watch it on TIVO {tho it aint HD}.

I wasnt worried about being spoiled by seeing results.. but that result's so ridiculous I guess I'll wait and watch it in pretty definition.

ADDED: I just got tricked into watching goal hilites.
WTH... On three of them, it looked like a Freddy Adu hilite reel... Where he convinced the Defenders to play road cones. So, near as I could process what I saw, the goals were from really crappy defending.

Argentina got destroyed by Germany. So glad we did not face the guys in the second round. Tough as nails, disciplined, and just bad ass. I can't believe Messi did not get a single goal in the tourney. The Gauchos had no answer for the German D that gave up some shots, but kept most of them at distance. As a soccer fan, I hope Spain gets through and they should. A German v Spain match up could be a super classico. Thoroughly enjoyed the undressing of the Arges.

Spain into the semis for the first time...ever. That's an incredible statistic.

Germany v. Spain - wow. It's funny to think of Spain as an underdog in this match - but, given current form, that is exactly what they are.

Evidently, ABC decided to have Darke ["the match is 30 seconds old and there's still no score] and Harkes ignore a very tightly contested match between Spain and Paraguay and concentrate, instead, on questioning every single decision of the referee. I particularly enjoyed Darke's comment on the ref making Alonso retake his penalty: "Yes, there were several players encroaching when the kick was taken, but that's hardly ever called." Enlightening.

What I saw was a fun match with a lot of drama. two saved penalties within 60 seconds of on-field action at both ends of the park is amazing. Paraguay's strikers looked incredibly fast and lethal. Villa and Iniesta looked like exploding any moment for Spain, and the two best players on the pitch were the goalkeepers. This was a cracking match.

Although I'm seriously considering sending ABC/ESPN a letter pointing out that there actually are Americans other than John Harkes who could do color commentary, I do treasure today's John Harkesism:

"More and more Paraguay's chances are few and far between."

Harkes is an idiot. He said something about the smallest guys in the World Cup being on the pitch, and I shivered from his own embarassment.

    Excellent summary Don!

How good was Paraguay's defense? The lone goal they give up to mighty Spain and the hottest striker in the world required the ball the hit both posts before rolling across the line.

great idea! I think it's needed even more than goal-tending because with goal tending you get the points even though you cant be positive about making the basket. With the goal line hand ball you know it's a goal.
