But this U-23 squad represents the future of the senior team in another dimension, too. Its technical ability, its style, its knack for hogging the ball and dominating possession, its running, cutting, passing and pressing are all in the image of senior national team coach Jurgen Klinsmann's vision for the entire program. The U-23s' flowing, forceful game, which overwhelmed Mexico in a resounding 2-0 win on Feb. 29, is what Klinsmann hopes to apply to a traditionally stodgy, workmanlike, full national team.
This is no coincidence, of course. "I've been working with Jurgen for the past four months on a weekly basis," U-23 head coach Caleb Porter said during a recent conference call. "It's been a great cooperation."
